Accessibility statement

Last reviewed 9 October 2026.

We want every parent, child, supporter and volunteer to be able to use this site and the Soma Squad dashboards, however they browse: with a keyboard, a screen reader, at a larger text size, or with reduced motion turned on.

Our commitment

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA across the public site and every dashboard, including the Child mode a young reader uses on their own.

What is built in

  • A “Skip to content” link on every page, and a single, clear heading structure.
  • Every page is built from semantic landmarks: a header, a main area and a footer, with ARIA used only where plain HTML cannot say enough on its own.
  • Everything you can do with a mouse, you can do with a keyboard alone, including the Soma Loop tabs, the storybook reader, the stage finder quiz and every dashboard’s switches and action buttons.
  • A visible focus outline on every interactive element, and a 4.5 to 1 minimum contrast between text and its background.
  • Charts, such as the admin dashboard’s giving chart, always come with a “Show as a table” alternative, and every illustration that is purely decorative is hidden from screen readers.
  • Buttons that do two things, like “Mark as talked about” or a dashboard switch, announce what just happened in words, not only with a colour change.
  • Pages respect your device’s reduced motion setting, including the storybook reader’s sun illustration and the studio’s animations.
  • The storybook reader can read a story aloud and highlight each word as it is spoken, for a child who reads better with support.

Known limits

We are not aware of any part of the site that falls short of WCAG 2.1 AA at the time of writing. If you find one, please tell us using the details below, and we will fix it.

Report a problem

If something on this site or in a dashboard is hard to use with the way you browse, write to [email protected] with the page and what happened. We reply within two working days.

How we test

Every page is checked with an automated accessibility scanner, a full keyboard pass, and a real screen reader, on both a Mac and a phone, before it goes live.
